Stellar Atmospheres Near an AGN: The Importance of Radiation Pressure from Trapped Lyman-α Photons
نویسندگان
چکیده
We derive an analytic expression for the intensity of resonance-line radiation “trapped” in a semi-infinite medium. Given a source function and destruction probability per scattering, the radiation pressure due to trapped photons can be calculated by numerically integrating over analytic functions. We apply this formalism to a plane-parallel model stellar atmosphere to calculate the radiation pressure due to Lyman-α photons produced following absorption of UV and X-rays from an AGN. For low surface gravity stars near the AGN (g ∼ 10 cm s−2, r ∼ 0.25 pc), we find that the pressure due to Lyman-α photons becomes an appreciable fraction of that required for hydrostatic support. If the broad emission line emitting gas in AGNs and QSOs consists of stellar outflows, it may be driven, in part, by Lyman-α pressure. The Vertical Structure and Ultraviolet Spectrum of Accretion Disks Heated by Internal Dissipation in Active Galactic Nuclei
We present an improved calculation of the vertical structure and ultraviolet spectrum of a dissipative accretion disk in an AGN. We calculate model spectra in which the viscous stress is proportional to the total pressure, the gas pressure only and the geometric mean of the radiation and gas pressures (cf. Laor & Netzer 1989: LN89). As a result of a more complete treatment of absorptive opacity...
متن کاملX-ray irradiated model stellar atmospheres
We present equations and details of the computer code for precise calculation of LTE model atmospheres which are illuminated by an external radiation field. Both radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium, and coherent Thomson electron scattering have been assumed. Radiation field at each frequency and depth level is computed with the method of variable Eddington factors. The code is fully suitable ...
متن کاملCosmological hydrogen recombination : Ly n line feedback and continuum escape
We compute the corrections to the cosmological hydrogen recombination history due to delayed feedback of Lyman-series photons and the escape in the Lyman-continuum. The former process is expected to slightly delay recombination, while the latter should allow the medium to recombine a bit faster. It is shown that the subsequent feedback of released Lyman-n photons on the lower lying Lyman-(n − 1...
متن کاملIntensity Mapping of Lyman-alpha Emission during the Epoch of Reionization
We calculate the absolute intensity and anisotropies of the Lyman-α radiation field present during the epoch of reionization. We consider emission from both galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM) and take into account the main contributions to the production of Lyman-α photons: recombinations, collisions, continuum emission from galaxies and scattering of Lyman-n photons in the IGM. We fin...
متن کاملPregalactic Black Hole Formation with an Atomic Hydrogen Equation of State
The polytropic equation of state of an atomic hydrogen gas is examined for primordial halos with baryonic masses of Mh ∼ 10 7 − 10 M⊙. For roughly isothermal collapse around 10 4 K, we find that line trapping of Lyman α (HI and HeII) photons causes the polytropic exponent to stiffen to values significantly above unity. Under the assumptions of zero H2 abundance and very modest pollution by meta...
